Egyptian singer Amr Diab appears on Times Square billboard in NYC

Egyptian singer Amr Diab last week became the first Arab musician to be featured on a Times Square billboard in New York by Spotify.
Spotify says Diab is the most listened to Arab singer on the streaming platform in the US and Europe. The recognition is part of Spotify’s global cultural initiative that seeks to promote Arabic music outside the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
“Famed for his lovestruck lyrics, steamy Mediterranean grooves, and techno ballads, Diab has since vaulted from his place as one of Egypt’s biggest stars in the ’80s to a position on the global stage on Spotify, most of his streams come from the United States, Sweden, and Germany,” Spotify said.
Spotify MENA region managing director Claudius Boller added that the streaming platform was keen on establishing a space where artists and fans could be introduced to each other.
“Experiencing Amr Diab’s devotion to Arabic music for nearly four decades straight and witnessing his fanbase expand across the world is beyond incredible. Today we are celebrating Diab’s legacy, and we are proud to see him shine so brightly on the global stage,” he said.
Diab said: “Music is a language that speaks emotions and not only words. I am blessed to have touched people around the world with my music. Spotify has allowed so many artists to connect with fans beyond borders and I am glad for that.”
Diab’s latest success comes after he was inducted into the Dubai Stars walk of fame on 21 October, where he was honoured for his immense contribution to the Middle Eastern music scene.
